Term 3

Welcome to Week 2

Welcome to the start of a new term at Corpus Christi College. I hope that families enjoyed the break and spent some quality time together. It was wonderful to welcome staff and students back to school last week to continue their learning journey at the College.

College Value: Commitment

At Corpus Christi we promote three core Values which underpin all that we do at the College. It is through the Values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion that we live out our Mission of Igniting the Spirit and strive towards our Vision of being Outstanding for Others.

We talk often at the school about the importance of us living out these Values in a real and tangible way and plan authentic opportunities to allow this to come to fruition. In making the commitment to fully invest themselves in the life of the school, students harness the growth potential of these opportunities and develop holistically.

In reaching out to others, students model Jesus who committed His life to us with courage and compassion. He was committed to justice and mercy for all and made many sacrifices in service of others. In the image of Jesus, all members of our community are called to do good works; operating with a sense of social justice and tenderness.

When students choose to commit to an action, cause or goal they challenge themselves to overcome obstacles and hardships, to be open to new learnings and opportunities and to be perseverant and resilient. Commitment provides a stepping stone to growth, it builds credibility and trust amongst teams and grows positive culture and legacy. Commitment anchors choice and promotes positive habits and consistent routines. Continuously committing to high levels of effort and application is a core ingredient to learning.

Upon returning to a new semester, we encourage our students to reflect on their previous efforts with a view of committing to continued growth moving forward. To help facilitate this commitment, students can set clear and measurable goals, create windows of dedicated study time, partner with others to improve accountability and track progress though regular reviews and reflections.

A return to a new semester is also the ideal opportunity for us to collectively review the commitment we make when we join a community like Corpus Christi. With an extensive history of over 40 years, we have a long-lasting legacy built through the commitment of many. When students choose to come to our school, they make the commitment to uphold our values system and contribute positively to our special community. Our students have an active role to play in promoting a positive, caring and inclusive culture where individual gifts and talents are celebrated. In committing to our College and wearing their uniform with pride, they connect themselves to our story and proudly, publicly represent what it stands for.

It is wonderful to see so many of our students committing fully to the life of our school in a multitude of different ways. We applaud our students for choosing to step into the broad array of differentiated learning avenues available at Corpus Christi to develop and grow their talents. There are so many examples of our students committing with dedication – most recently at our College Dance Gala.  Students from Years 4 to 12 committed their time and efforts over the course of the last semester to hone a terrific array of dance and musical theatre numbers, culminating in our three-evening Dance Gala last week. Students have right to be incredibly proud of their remarkable and highly professional performances supported by a very dedicated team of staff. Congratulations to all involved.

In continuing the Arts theme, our College Arts Captains joined our Head of Performing Arts, Mrs Jo Palmer, Deputy Principal Catholic Identity and Mission, Mr Damian Ramos, and myself at the Spirit of the Arts Mass at the Cathedral last week. This special occasion marks the opening of the Arts festival, with students from the College again heavily involved this year. Well done to these students for their commitment to the Arts and best wishes for their upcoming performances.

We acknowledge the commitment of our Year 12 students who gave of themselves so openly and generously at their Retreat in Week 10 of last term. Their experiences on Retreat in their final year at the College are special and long lasting. We also commend students from Years 9-12 who will be braving the elements on Friday at the annual Vinnies Winter Sleep Out to raise money and awareness for the homeless. We acknowledge these students for committing to being uncomfortable for a night in support of those less fortunate than themselves and to shine a light on the plight of around 122,500 people who are currently homeless in Australia.

We wish our Year 6 students well for their Confirmation workshop, scheduled for this evening at the College, and for their Commitment Masses, scheduled for this weekend at St Thomas More Parish Church. This is a special time in the lives of these students as they confirm their commitment to God and their faith through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Finally, we look forward to our Senior School Inter-House Athletics Carnival taking place on Thursday this week. This is a special opportunity for students to commit to their Houses with spirit and energy by participating fully in the day.

It is plain to see and easy to celebrate the terrific commitment of our students to the life of the College. This core Value of ours is a key ingredient to allow students to grow holistically and to shape their College community and the world around them positively.

Best wishes and every blessing

Jeff Allen

Principal

E-News Week 2

Dear Parents and Guardians

As we wrap up the first week of Term 3, I would like to warmly welcome all our families back to what promises to be a vibrant and meaningful term. I hope the school break provided your family with moments of rest, reflection, and renewal.

This term, we continue our journey through the Jubilee Year of Hope — a call to recognise the promise of growth, even in the face of challenge, and to move forward with faith in the goodness that lies ahead. Inspired by the words of the late Pope Francis, who reminded us that “hope speaks to us of a thirst, an aspiration, a longing for a life of fulfilment, a desire to achieve great things,” we aim to nurture a culture where our students remain curious, courageous, and compassionate in all they do.

We have already begun the term on a joyful and energetic note with the success of our Dance Gala on Wednesday evening. Our talented Year 6 students, along with our Year 4/5 Dance Collage group, took to the stage with confidence and creativity, showcasing the results of their hard work and dedication. We are incredibly proud of their performances and look forward to seeing them share their talents again at the upcoming Catholic Performing Arts Festival concerts.

There is much more to look forward to this term — from special liturgical celebrations to engaging learning experiences, leadership milestones, and opportunities to connect as a faith-filled community.

Building a Love for Reading: Decodable Readers and Novel Studies in Action

- Mrs de Groot

This year our school has been increasing the use of decodable readers to support our young learners in developing strong foundational reading skills. These specially designed books align with our new InitialLit program, which provides a structured and evidence-based approach to literacy instruction. Decodable readers give students the opportunity to practice the phonics patterns they are learning in class, helping to build confidence, accuracy, and fluency in reading. This approach ensures that all children are supported as they move towards becoming independent, successful readers.

For students in Years 3–6, we have also invested in sets of engaging class novels to support the development of reading skills through novel study. This approach, which is outlined as a key component of the Western Australian Curriculum, encourages students to explore texts in greater depth, enhancing their comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Our selection includes a diverse range of literature, including works by Indigenous authors, to ensure students are exposed to a variety of voices and perspectives. These shared reading experiences not only strengthen literacy skills but also foster a love of reading and an appreciation for Australia's rich cultural heritage.

Co-Curricular Sign-Ups – Term 3

Junior School

All sign-ups for Junior School students have been conducted online only. Registrations opened at 12.00 PM on Monday 23rd June. Registrations will remain open throughout the term for sign-ups unless a club is at full capacity. Registrations must be completed through the Parent Login.

Senior School

Senior School students had the option to register either online or in person. Both methods opened at lunchtime on Monday 23rd June. Registrations will remain open throughout the term for sign-ups unless a club is at full capacity. Registrations must be completed through the Parent Login.

 How to Sign Up

When you log in to register, please note that you will only see the activities available for your child’s year group. Signing up is an expression of interest only—you will receive an email confirmation if your child is accepted into their chosen activity.

Information on how to sign up is available here.

Recently, we experienced some technical issues affecting family sign-ups. Specifically:

  • In some cases, only one child from a multi-child family was appearing.

  • Some families were limited to only one parent being able to access the sign-up system.

We’re pleased to let you know that both issues have now been resolved. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding while we worked to fix them.

Frequently asked questions are captured here, however if you have any questions about the Co-Curricular program, feel free to reach out to Jo Kenny at jo.kenny@cewa.edu.au

Re: Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum

I am writing to inform you about the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) that your child/children will be learning throughout the year at Corpus Christi College. The KS:CPC is a Department for Education responsibility under the Children’s Protection Act 1993 and the Child Protection in Schools, Early Childhood Education and Care Services policy to ensure that effective abuse prevention programs are implemented and that all children and young people have access to the approved child protection curriculum.

It is a requirement that all K-12 students receive a protective behaviours and sexual abuse prevention education which is developed by experts in child abuse prevention, is age and developmental stage appropriate, is culturally appropriate, is integrated into the curriculum of the school and make relevant subject matter links, includes e-safety education and builds practice self-protective skills and strategies. Although parent permission is not required under the Education Act 1972, we encourage parents/carers to seek further clarification from their child’s classroom teacher if required and to provide the teacher with any relevant information about their child that could alleviate any concerns.

The KS: CPC is an evidence based, best practice curriculum developed collaboratively with child protection experts, teachers, educational leaders and other professionals. Our teachers delivering the program receive ongoing training in the use of the Keeping Safe Curriculum.

The KS: CPC is divided into 5 documents specific to the age and year level of students. There are an additional three documents for educators working with:

  • Aboriginal children and young people

  • Culturally and linguistically diverse children and young people

  • Children and young people with disability and additional needs.

The KSCPC is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities of increasing complexity. The two KSCPC Themes are:

  • Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe

  • Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.

The two KS:CPC Themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the students. The four KS:CPC Focus Areas are:

  • Focus Area 1: The right to be safe

  • Focus Area 2: Relationships

  • Focus Area 3: Recognising and reporting abuse

  • Focus Area 4: Protective strategies

The KS:CPC fits primarily within the Health and Physical Education learning area of the Australian Curriculum and is complemented by the URSTRONG friendship program. Lessons are often integrated across other learning areas. At Corpus Christi College the KS:CPC ensures your child/children’s wellbeing is prioritised and the pastoral care provided by the teaching and non- teaching staff is aligned to national practices and guidelines.

Please access the KS:CPC website: http://tiny.cc/KSCPC-ParentCarerInfo for additional information if required. You are encouraged to contact Mr Patrick Woolley, Mrs Danielle Damjanovic or child’s/children’s Home Room, Head of Year or Junior Classroom teacher if you have any questions about the Keeping Safe Curriculum.
