Careers Week Spotlight: Finding Purpose in the Law
As part of Careers Week, we’re celebrating the diverse and inspiring journeys of our Corpus Christi College alumni. This week, we’re highlighting Carys, a graduate who has embraced leadership, service, and community impact throughout her studies and early career.
From supporting vulnerable members of the community through her work in the legal sector to running her own support work business and leading student initiatives at university, Carys continues to demonstrate the values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion in everything she does.
Below, she shares her pathway, what inspires her, and her advice for students exploring their own futures.
What are you currently doing in your career or studies?
I am currently studying a Bachelor of Laws at Curtin University. Alongside my studies, I work as a Paralegal at Legal Aid WA in the Criminal Law Division as part of the Disability Advocacy Referral and Diversion (DARDY) Project. I also run a support work business assisting children living with disabilities to participate in the community. In addition, I am involved in several leadership roles at university, including serving as President of the Curtin Student Law Society.
What do you enjoy most about your work or field?
What I enjoy most about working in law is the opportunity to contribute to meaningful outcomes for people who need support navigating the legal system. Working at Legal Aid has given me firsthand insight into how the law can impact people’s lives, particularly those who are vulnerable or facing significant barriers to accessing justice.
How did Corpus Christi College help shape your pathway?
During my time at Corpus Christi, I was involved in the Student Leadership Team, which I joined in Year 7 after previously holding leadership roles in primary school. Those opportunities helped me continue developing confidence in leadership and getting involved in the community. That experience carried into university, where I’ve continued to take on leadership roles alongside my studies and work.
What advice would you give to students exploring future careers?
My biggest piece of advice would be to stay curious and take opportunities as they come. You don’t need to have everything figured out straight away. Trying different experiences, asking questions and connecting with people in fields you’re interested in can help you discover what truly motivates you.
