Getting Smart with Feedback

Our teachers are always looking for innovative ways to engage our students, including how they provide feedback to assessments. Our teachers know the value of good feedback and students learn through finding out what they have done effectively and how to adjust their approach to make improvements.

In Languages, Ms Claudia Laboudeuse has been making effective use of the iPad by using the Smart Annotation feature in Pages. This feature cleverly anchors explanations to a word so that it moves with the word when the document is edited. Ms Laboudeuse has found this particularly effective for giving feedback to individual students, being able to insert audio has also helped capture more detailed explanations or give feedback to students.

In Ms Laboudeuse’s example, you can see how she formatively points out what the student did well and provides pointers for them to improve. With Smart Annotation, students are able to move the typed text whilst keeping Ms Laboudeuse’s annotations intact. This differs from traditional PDF annotation apps as conventionally; annotations do not move with the text but are layered on top.
