Senior School

Breadth of Curriculum

The College curriculum offers students in Years 10 to 12 modules/courses across the nine learning areas of the College:  Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Society and Environment, Languages, The Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Technology and Enterprise.

The College offers a wide range of Curriculum Council Courses in Year 11 and 12 to cater for University entrance and other avenues students may be wishing to pursue.  The College also offers a VET programme including INSTEP and INSTEP Plus as well as a range of TAFE Certificate I and Certificate II courses.  The Careers Advisor is available to offer assistance in subject selection into Year 10, 11 and 12.

Choice of Curriculum

There are varying degrees of student choice in the curriculum with the main difference being between Year 10 and Years 11 & 12.  In Year 10 they are able to select their curriculum with the exception of Religious Education, English and Mathematics.  In Year 11 and 12 this choice extends to all courses other than Religion and Life.  The Year 10 curriculum is semesterised to increase student choice of modules/courses.

When students are choosing their modules/courses it is important that they consider the following points:

  • Academic Ability – In order to achieve success in many Year 11 and 12 Courses, students need to have demonstrated a high degree of academic ability and achievement in Year 10 Modules. Without this background, students invariably have difficulty with the Year 11 content. It is essential to take careful note of Year 10 entry requirements.
  • Interests – The range of choices available in courses aims to give students the opportunity to pursue their particular interests at whatever level they are able to perform.
  • Future Intentions – Students, whether planning to seek early employment, employment after Secondary Graduation or to continue with further studies (TAFE, tertiary or other) should choose courses which will maximise their options for the future.

Provision for Student Needs

The College provides for the needs of each student by offering a range of courses.  As well as offering a standard mainstream curriculum the college also has an Educational Support Centre and a Learning Centre through which individualised curriculum is available for students depending on their needs.

The College caters for Gifted and Talented students via a range of group and individual programmes. In
Year 10 the College selects students into the Cambridge IGCSE Science course. In many subjects extension programmes and competitions are offered to students as extension to the existing curriculum.

Assessment and Reporting

The College curriculum is outcomes focussed in Year 10, in Year 11 and 12 it follows the guidelines provided by the Curriculum Council for all Senior Secondary Courses. The College reports to parents twice a year providing information regarding academic progress and work ethic. Each reporting period is supplemented by the provision of Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews to provide a more detailed discussion of student learning.
