Teacher Assistant (Special Learning Needs - Term Two 2019)

Full-time, Term 2

Due to LSL and internal movement, the College is seeking applications from enthusiastic and hard-working Teacher Assistants able to work with students with disabilities.

A fixed-term position is available with an immediate start for Term Two 2019.

Preferred applicants should be qualified (Certificate IV), experienced and have a good understanding of working with students with disabilities. The successful applicants will have the ability to remain calm under pressure, have a warm and friendly disposition, excellent interpersonal skills and be a team player.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Under general guidance, the Teacher Assistant can be expected to perform tasks within the following range:

  • Implement and report on a student’s Individualised Education Plan (IEP) and Teaching & Learning Adjustments (TALA) in a team situation. (A meeting is held with the parents to finalise the IEP.)

  • Confidently work with an individual student or small groups of students under teacher direction.

  • Under teacher direction, assist with the preparation and maintenance of the learning environment.

  • Support the maintenance and use of specialised equipment including mobility devices and supports, specialised seating, digital devices and digital technologies, augmentative and assistive communication resources etc.

  • Use a variety of modification and adjustment strategies to support students to access class activities and assessments

  • Assist in the care, monitoring, and supervision of out-of-class activities, which may include before and after school, recess and lunch time periods, sport, excursions and camps.

  • Assist teachers with administrative tasks, such as resource preparation, displaying student work in classrooms, contribution to IEPs, etc.

  • Other duties as required by Principal or delegate.

Teacher Assistants in Special Learning Needs can also be expected to:

  • Use a variety of strategies to support positive behavioural change

  • Implement and/or supervise hygiene and self-care programs, such as feeding, dressing, drinking, catheterisations and toileting including the cleaning of students and their clothes.

  • Assist students with administering medication, dressing, bathing, toileting, lifting and, where necessary, clean soiled clothing and areas.
    (Applicants must be physically able to assist male and female students with their requirements for daily living whilst they are at school)

  • Monitor and assist students in work experience, TAFE programs and transport training and liaise with employers or TAFE professionals.
